Why Version Control Exists

The Pendrive Problem

Before Git, before GitHub - software development was, chaotic. If you’ve been in IT long enough, you will instantly relate to this story. If you’re new, this will help you understand why version control exist and not optional in today’s world.

Let’s go back in time ⏳

Why Version Control Exists

At its core, version control exists to manage change. Software is never written once and forgotten. It keeps evolving according to time.

  • New Features are added.

  • Bugs are fixed

  • Code is refactored

  • Multiple people work on the same files.

Now imagine doing all of these without any systems to track changes. That’s exactly how things worked earlier.

The Pendrive Problem in Software Development.

Once upon a time, this was very common workflow:

  1. Developer A writes some code.

  2. Copies the project to a pendrive

  3. Gives it to Developer B

  4. Developer B modifies the code

  5. Copies it back to the pendrive

This sounds simple but in reality, it was painful.

In old days Folder structure everyone had

project
project_final
project_final_v1
etc...................

Now each folder above represents fear 😱, not confidence 😀

Issues which you faced while using pendrive:

  • Could not track which code was updated

  • Overwriting someone else’s work.

  • Not knowing which version is correct.

  • Only 1 developer work at a time.

  • Collaboration issues occurs as people grows.

Problem Faced Before Version Control System 😱

  1. Overwriting Code

Two developers working on the same file ?

  • Developer A updates file1.js

  • Developer B updates file1.js

  • Whoever copies last wins

  • Other changes are gone forever

No warning - No History - No Undo

  1. Losing Changes permanently

If something broke, the only question comes into mind :

Do you have to old code somewhere ?

If answer was “No” the code lost forever. No rollback, No time travel 🧭

  1. No Collaboration History

There was no way to know:

  • Who changed what.

  • Why a change was made

  • When a bug was introduced

  1. Email and Pendrive Confusion

  • Different people had different versions

  • No single source of truth.

Why Version Control Became Mandatory 🚀

Version control solves all pendrive-era problems:

  • ✅ Keeps complete history of changes

  • ✅ Allows multiple developers to work safely

  • ✅ Prevents accidental overwrites

  • ✅ Makes collaboration smooth

  • ✅ Enables rollback to any point in time

That single shift changed software development forever.

Final Thoughts

Version control didn’t appear because developers love tools. It appeared because we were tired of losing code, time, and sanity.

The pendrive problem taught us one hard lesson:

Managing code without history is impossible at scale.

That’s why today, version control is not optional — it’s the foundation of modern software development.

Thank you :) Happy Coding !
